Dr Asma Al-Kandari only Middle-Eastern participant at the ESGE Live Cases KUWAIT: A Kuwaiti specialist in gastrointestinal diseases performed two live medical procedures before an international audience during a major European conference on digestive endoscopy in Milan, Italy.
Consultant in gastroenterology and endoscopy at Jahra Hospital, Dr Asma Al-Kandari, was representing Kuwait at the ESGE Days conference, the Ministry of Health said in a statement on Saturday. Dr Al-Kandari was the only participant from the Middle East in the conference’s ESGE Live Cases, joining experts from 13 countries. The procedures included the removal of a tumor from the appendix using colonoscopy and the removal of a tumor in the transverse colon using advanced endoscopic techniques. The demonstrations took place during the annual meeting of the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, held from May 14 to 16.
The Ministry of Health said the participation reflects Kuwait’s representation in a high-level scientific forum bringing together specialists from around the world. It said the Kuwaiti doctor carried out the procedures as part of live demonstrations attended by experts at the conference. It added that the conference included leading international experts in gastrointestinal endoscopy, oncology, surgery, and pathology, and that Dr Al-Kandari also took part in a multidisciplinary scientific session focused on evaluating complex digestive system cases.
“The session brought together specialists from several fields to assess complex cases and support better medical decision-making,” the ministry said. Dr Al-Kandari also presented a research paper on the use of artificial intelligence in assessing the depth of gastrointestinal tumors through AI-supported endoscopic techniques. It said the approach aims to improve diagnostic accuracy and treatment decisions. “The study focuses on using artificial intelligence tools to improve the evaluation of tumor depth and support clinical decision-making,” the ministry said. It added that Dr Al-Kandari is a member of the committee responsible for developing protocols and clinical guidelines within the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
The conference is considered one of the largest international gatherings in the field, featuring advanced training sessions, live demonstrations from European medical centers, and participation from experts across five continents. It also includes multiple scientific tracks and research presentations on emerging techniques in gastrointestinal medicine. (KUNA)
